PROM SCENE!
Dreading the whole prom scene? Here are some ideas to make it fun and exciting.
The whole prom scene can be really annoying if you don’t feel a part of. Many teens just don’t get into it the way that others do. The prom queen (you can usually tell who it’s going to be) and the captain of the football team always look forward to it, so do all the girls who look like they could be cover models. But what about all of those normal kids who are feeling the pressure to be more than they can be? How do you make the prom scene fun and exciting?
The first tip is to just be you. You don’t have to compete to be someone who you are not. Everyone has their own look and personality and yours is all your own. Don’t try to change it. Flaunt it! You’re beautiful in your own way and if you feel comfortable with that it will show through. The prom scene doesn’t have to be grueling torture. It can be fun for you also.
Find someone who thinks like you and appreciates you for who you are. One of the most painful things that kids go through on prom night is the realization that they don’t belong with who they chose to go to the prom with. Stick with your own. You’ll have more fun if you and your prom date have the same interests, even if one of those interests is just making fun of all those kids who are consumed by the whole prom scene.
Don’t be afraid to ask the DJ to play some of the music you like. Not everyone in the room is going to like top 40 or hip hop. Request a little rock or punk if that’s what you’re into. If nothing else, you’ll get to enjoy the look on everyone else’s face when the sounds of metal guitar start cranking through the speakers. You might be surprised that there are others in your class who are into it too. There’s nothing funnier than watching the perfect people do a little head banging.
As a final note, if you really can’t stand the prom scene, don’t look at is as the prom scene. This is your celebration party to finish high school with a bang. You have a right to be there just as much as anyone else does. Get dressed up and show your face despite what anyone else may think. Proms are what you make of them, so have some fun. Next year is college, or work, or the military, or maybe that break you’ve been looking for in the music industry. High school’s over. That should bring a smile to your face.
