Hey! What’s the deal here? Everyone talks about the prom queen, but what about the prom king? How come the guys never get mentioned when it comes to prom royalty? Every time you hear people talk about the prom they want to know who the prom queen was but they never seem to care who the prom king was. If it’s brought up at all it’s an afterthought and an inquiry as to whether he was her prom date. Why is that?
The truth is, guys, in prom circles, you are a secondary citizen. This whole ritual began as a courting routine where the guy had to ask the parents’ permission to call upon a girl and then bend over backwards to impress her and her folks. It’s developed into a multi-billion dollar industry that is centered on what she is wearing, the prom dress. It’s all about the dress. You may look great in your tuxedo when you accept the prom king crown, but they are all looking at her.
That doesn’t mean that your title isn’t important and that it won’t have some lasting effects in your life. Some of the girls might think you’re impressive. Your guy friends will definitely never let you forget that you were the prom king. It’s almost as if the title becomes a recurring nightmare instead of a dream come true. It’s tough to be Mr. Prom Queen, but you’ll have to live with it. Hopefully you have thick skin because there will be a whole lot of jokes being told about it for years to come.
On the other hand, you’ll get to stand on stage and have your picture taken with probably the hottest girl in school. Maybe she’s your date and maybe she’s not, but it’s a moment you’ll share forever. That creates a special bond that no one can take away. So tough it out! You have every right to be prom king and you should be proud if you are elected to the position. I wouldn’t mention it while you’re watching football with the guys, though.
